A round-up of answers to the usual questions from one of As the
World Turns' newest cast members.
Home Base:
I was born in Baltimore. I still live there. We're commuting to
New York now. Growing up, my sister and I danced in the ballet,
The Nutcracker. I really liked being on stage, and so did
my sister. And my mom was like "Well, we could probably get
them into this," so when I was eight years old, we went to
a kids' commercial agency in Washington to see if we could be in
toy commercials and stuff like that.
Sister Act:
And then my sister got really tall, and so she became a model. She
got sent to New York, because that's where all the work was. When
I was twelve, I came up to New York with her, and I got placed at
an acting agency and a modeling agency, too.
Model Child:
When I first started, I was leaving school three or four times a
week to model, because I was a perfect children's size 10. I was
doing runway, catalogues, kid's campaigns, those kinds of things.
But then I grew. Of course. And my agency was like, "Let's
push more on the acting." Because as soon as you get over five
feet, then you're too tall to be doing kid modeling, you're too
short to be doing adult modeling. There's more work in acting at
my size.
City Girl:
I did an episode of Sex & the City, and it was so much
fun, it was unbelievable. I was with two other girls. We were this
girl's posse, we were her best friends and we were just terrible
people. The story was about this girl having a bat mitzvah, and
we were her gang and we just kind of made fun of people. We made
Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her friends feel terrible about
themselves. And we got to wear these huge heels, like enormous,
like six inches -- no kidding! And then we had these really sparkly
clothes on, and we got to walk around like, "We're the coolest."
The way things worked out, the other two girls had to say a lot
of bad language, but I didn't. My mom was really excited about that
because people watch the show -- everyone watches the show and she
knew people would see me.
Turn the World on With Your Smile:
My agency called, and they were like, "We want you to go on
this audition." I was like, "Well, okay, but
"
because the part of Lucy was written as a seventeen year old originally,
and I was like, "I don't think so, because I'm only fifteen,
and I really look fifteen, so I don't think so." But they called
back and said, "I really think you should go to this one."
So, I went up, and I auditioned. And then I got a call back, and
then I screen-tested once. And then I screen-tested again. And then
I got it.
Where to Go:
At the audition, they actually really didn't give us that much direction.
They really didn't say who she was, because when I auditioned, I
auditioned for the role of "Kristi." So I didn't know
who Kristi was -- not that I knew who Lucy was, either. When I went
in for the first audition, the casting director kind of explained,
"She's very sheltered, she's very sweet, she's not angry, she's
not mean." And that was pretty much all he gave us, but then
the script was written enough, so that you could understand where
she was coming from.
Junior Achievement:
Kristina Sisco (Abigail) has been just awesome. She showed me everything,
and she's all, "Oh, you remind me of me when I was coming in
for my first time." Because she started as a senior in high
school. She was like, "I know what it's like to be in high
school and then come here." It's so different, because you're
surrounded by people so much older than you and it's really not
a high school environment. She was showing me around.
First Day Shock
Before I started, I had no idea how many lines were in a soap opera
episode. I was blown away. I did the screen test, and that was only
one scene. So I come in and I get the script and I think I'm only
in one scene. I flip it open, and I'm in eight scenes! And I'm like,
"ALL of this on ONE day???" I had no idea how I was going
to pull it off. I still don't know how I pulled it off. I studied
for hours and hours and hours. I still have to read it over and
over again. I make my mom leave the apartment so I can say it out
loud. That's pretty much how I memorize it, and then I just try
to figure out how Lucy would say things. That's not too hard, because
I'm so much like Lucy, I can just assume that this is how I would
say it, and so this is how someone like me would say it.
Lucy Links:
I'm a lot like Lucy. I go to an all-girls prep school. And Lucy
went to an all-girls boarding school, very sheltered. Where I live
in Baltimore is very sheltered. It's not like being in New York
City at all. I think Oakdale is kind of like the miniature New York
City, where dangerous stuff is all around. So I can kind of relate
to the change for Lucy from a prep school environment to the big
city.
All in the Family
Getting an instant TV family was very weird for me. I have a grandmother
I see once every three years or so. So it was kind of weird for
me to have a TV grandmother. It was difficult to develop a relationship
like that, because I really don't know the relationship that a grandmother
would have with her granddaughter, like a close one, where she would
see her often. But Liz (Hubbard; Lucinda) is making it all so easy,
and that's wonderful. And I don't have a brother, so having a dead
brother is even more difficult. But it works out. I can understand
how it would be to miss a sibling, because my sister moved away
to boarding school when I was young, so I know what it's like to
be sad and think, "She's not here anymore
I'm all alone!"
Daddy Dearest:
Hunt (Block; Craig) is such a talented actor. He makes it easy to
work with him. He just kind of handed me what Lucy and Craig's relationship
would be like. Just the way he treats me, the way he, with his body
language, shows how close we are. It just makes you realize how
close the connection is between the father and the daughter.
Young Love?:
I don't know when I'm going to get a love interest! They won't tell
me! I'm assuming it will be soon. I think they're going to bring
in a love interest soon. It'll be great, because I'm the only one
my age on the show right now, and I think it will be kind of cool
to have another person my age and for there to be a young couple.
