Amid Jake and Molly's wedding planning, Molly's mugshot popped up in several embarrasing situations. Coincidentally, the person ultimately responsible for her arrest and mugshot (ex-boyfriend, Nick Scudder) moved to town and was working at WOAK as an editor. Slowly, he became involved with Abigail. When Molly discovered their relationship, she did everything she could to end it. Abigail resolved to run away with Nick but discovered his true colors on the night they were to run away. Nick was killed, and Molly arrived on the scene soon thereafter. She went into protective mode and altered the scene to corroborate her own confession. Enough holes were poked in her story she was dropped as a suspect.
Abigail finally remembered what happened the night of Nick’s death. Worried about escaping the law, Mary took Molly hostage and demanded $1M ransom from Jake. When he arrived for the exchange, he charged Mary. Though she fell off the roof and died, she shot Jake in the struggle, and he succumbed to his wounds and died.
After Jake died in May 2002, Donna decided to keep Bridget and Michele, and to file for custody, given they were her last remaining links to Vicky. Donna and Marley reached a compromise where Donna would keep the twins for 6 months, with Molly able to visit them at any time.
