Oscar and Deacon: Friends or Foes?
Oscar (Brian Gaskill) and Deacon (Sean Kanan) share some history from when they both lived in Las Vegas. Now that they're both in Los Angeles, they are once again moving in the same circles and possibly even pursuing the same woman. So what exactly is their connection? "They were friends, which is something that we came up with," explains Brain Gaskill. "Deacon was a dealer at Oscar's father's casino. There was some money gone and we blamed him and we got him kicked out of town. He probably didn't do it, [but] we're not really talking about that. [Oscar] keeps saying there was no proof really and [Deacon] keeps saying that he didn't do it, from an audience perspective you get the feeling that he probably didn't do it. Even Oscar sort of backs off. He doesn't push it too hard, because he really doesn't have any proof and he just uses it over his head like maybe you did, so you owe me."

The incident at the Ozzz nightclub, when the chandelier fell on Macy causing her to end up in a coma, didn't help the antagonistic feelings between the two either. Brian, however, explains that he and his co-star Sean Kanan have steered away from presenting them as arch rivals. "[The scenes are] written more black and white like we're enemies," says Brian. "We end up playing it with a few more colors than that. Deacon has more reason to not like me than I do him. We have reasons to not like each other, but we try to not play it too strong. Even early on, there was this part in the middle of this argument, I say to him, 'You've got a kid?' and he added in, 'Yeah. Can you believe that?' Like in the middle of this argument, we've reconnected as friends for a second, and we've tried to get some of that stuff in there."

Brian goes on to explain that he and his other co-stars, Jennifer Finnigan (Bridget) and Adrienne Frantz (Amber), have also discussed the dynamic between their characters. "With the three characters, with Amber, Bridget and Deacon, and those three actors, we've tried to keep the relationships as human as possible and not as clearly black and white as sometimes the scripts willBt's not the writers' fault, it's the medium. It's a soap opera and you need the love triangle, you need the enemies, but we're all trying to make it as interesting as possible."
