Kurt: You're a product.
Sofia: I am?
Kurt: You're a commodity. Thomas tendered your body in exchange for money.
Sofia: So I'm an article of trade?
Kurt: Yes. A useful thing, in terms of classic capitalism. I studied economics.

Sofia

Romanian-born ELINA LOWENSOHN trained at Playwrights' Horizons at New York University and teamed with Hartley in "Simple Men," his short "Theory Of Achievement" and upcoming, the Berlin segment of "Flirt." Recently, she played the title role in Michael Almereyda's "Nadja," with Martin Donovan and Peter Fonda.

"Sofia's an amateur at trying to change her life. She has an outer layer filled with experiences of the porn world, of drugs and sex, but inside she is like a child because her emotional development stopped when Thomas enslaved her into pornography.

"I think Hal wrote this part for me because of something in my personality that attracted and interested him. I know that people see me as being slightly mysterious when they first meet me--perhaps it's because I'm a foreigner. I also know that I have a quality of innocence but at the same time a certain sexuality. I think it's these aspects of my personality that Hal finds interesting. Every actor is a director's tool and I am more than happy to be Hal's tool. I'm grateful to be a part of something of quality. I believe that 95% of an actor's good work is down to the director--and the bad work too. It's the director that molds whatever talent the actor has."
