STEPHEN TOBOLOWSKY

(Trevor) American actor Stephen Tobolowsky has recently appeared in several blockbuster movies, such as Mississipi Burning, Basic Instinct, Groundhog Day, The Grifters, Mr. Magoo, among many others.

Stephen Tobolowsky went to Brazil for the first time to shoot BOSSA NOVA. Tobolowsky plays, Gary, a lawyer who travels from New York to Rio to do business with Pedro Paulo (Antonio Fagundes), but also to settle a personal issue: meeting Nadine (Drica Moraes), with whom he'd been exchanging love letters over the Internet. There's only one little problem: he told her he was a Soho artist, with hair down to his waist, and a tattoo on his back. Despite that, he's excited about meeting his girlfriend, who told him she'd won a Girl from Ipanema beauty pageant five years before. The transformation of this virtual love into a real one is one of the funniest subplots of BOSSA NOVA.

While shooting, Stephen Tobolowsky couldn't hide his enthusiasm with his role: "My agent sent me the script, I read it and loved it. I see Trevor as a man who probably has never really loved in his life, and now all of a sudden he finds himself travelling half way across the globe to meet the woman he thinks he's in love with. Obviously, both parties have lied, but, they finally meet and fall in love - for real. There are so many films about young people falling in love for the first time and everything is always so wonderful. But there are very few about people who feel incapacitated for a love relationship - people who feel left out, without any chance of loving."

According to the actor, the fact that he couldn't speak Portuguese and was surrounded by Brazilian actors, with the exception of Amy Irving, was another plus of the character: "That's how he felt in Rio - surrounded by people he couldn't understand." However, as in the film, communicating was easier than he expected.

Stephen Tobolowsky says one aspect was to him the most interesting in the film: "All characters think they're through with love - including mine. When I read the script, the first thing that caught my eye was the fact that, it was not only a very funny story, but the characters were very real, all with their love pains".
