Leocadia - Eulalia RamŪn

With a background in theatre, classical ballet and pantomime, Eulalia RamŪn, in the space of a decade, has become an actress sought out by prestigious directors like Vicente Aranda, Montxo Armend·riz, Imanol Uribe, Mario Camus and Carlos Saura himself.

For her role in "Goya in Bordeaux" the well-known expressive power of her face was crucial. She plays Goya's last lover, Leocadia Zorrilla de Weiss, a generous and self-confident woman who looked after the painter until the end. After the death of Josefina Bayeu, the painter's first wife, Goya met Leocadia, and they stayed together. Some versions have it that he met her at the wedding of his son Javier to Gumersinda Goicoechea, to whose family Leocadia belonged. Other sources assure us that the relationship did not become close until a couple of years after Josefina Bayeu's death in 1802. Forty years Goya's junior, Leocadia was with the artist right up until his exile in Bordeaux. Rosarita is her daughter, but history does not reveal whether she was also the daughter of the artist.

"Leocadia has a tender, warm idea of Francisco. At one point in the film, Goya says "What would I do without you?" He is ill, and has come to a point where he feels himself going back over the steps of his life. It is the clarity of the final moment. On the other hand, Leocadia is living with Goya at his most visceral. They have only just met when he begins his most intense, personal artistic period - the period of the "dark" paintings."

Leocadia: These paintings are going to cause us problems, Francisco.
Goya: I'll paint what I like on the walls of my own home.
Leocadia: I don't understand this attraction you have for monsters and nightmares. It's hard for me to see things that way.
Goya: If you want, I'll destroy them. You and the child are the most important things for me.
