Between 1980 and 1987, DiCillo acted in numerous stage and independent film productions. Included were two of his own -- the original "Johnny Suede," a one man show performed at the Home for Contemporary Theater in 1987 and his play "Fluorescent Hunger," which won First Prize in the Charlotte Rep's International New Play Festival in 1989 (and in which he played the lead).
In 1992 DiCillo was invited to the Sundance Institute as a Directing Fellow based upon his screenplay, JOHNNY SUEDE. He directed the film in 1992, starring Brad Pitt and LIVING IN OBLIVION lead, Catherine Keener. The film went on to win the Grand Prize at the 1992 Locarno International Film Festival.
His screenplay, BOX OF MOONLIGHT, is in development with a tentative start date of Summer 1995. He is currently at work on a new screenplay. Apart from JOHNNY SUEDE, his other directing credits include plays, short films, documentaries and music videos.
