STEFANO DIONISI (Lucca) began his career in 1987 starring in the TV movie ROSE with Valerie Perrine, directed by Thomas Sherman. In cinema he made his first appearance in 1989 directed by Francesco Maselli in IL SEGRETO co-starring with Natassja Kinski. In 1994 he was awarded with a Davide De Donatello Special Award for his achievements within the young Italian Cinema. Also in 1994, after six months preparation, he played Carlo Broschi, the renowned castrated sopranist of the 18th century, in the film directed by the Belgian Gerard Corbiau FARINELLI IL CASTRATO (box office winner in France, winner of the Golden Globe and 1995 Oscar nomination as best foreign film). The same year in Lisbon, he played the role of Monteiro Rossi, with Marcello Mastroianni in the film SOSTIENE PEREIRA directed by Roberto Faenza. Beginning 1995, again in Lisbon, he played in the film UNE FILLE GALANTE directed by Nadine Trintignant with Irene Jacob and Marie Trintignant. That same year, he appeared in the Italian film L'ARCANO INCANTORE directed by Pupi Avati. In 1996 he appeared in two films THE TRUCE directed by Francesco Rosi which starred John Turturro and BAMBOLA directed by Bigas Luna. 1997 saw him do three films. In addition to THE LOSS OF SEXUAL INNOCENCE, he co-starred with Christina Applegate in the film CLAUDINE'S RETURN directed by Antonio Tibaldi as well as the Italian film L'ABERO DELLE PERE directed by Francesca Archibugi.
STEFANO DIONISI came to my attention one night in LA two years ago. I was on my way to a blues club to hear a band. Stefano was with a group of friends and shyly introduced himself and bought me a beer. He was in LA to have meetings and be available for work. Very well known in his native Italy it was still not easy for him to cross over into Hollywood. I liked him immediately and as soon as I began casting for this film I offered him the role of LUCCA. It was not until I began editing the film that I realized what a powerful actor he was. When I was in Naples recently, I realized just how well known he is. Myself and the rest of the ensemble became the crowd, Stefano the star.
