It was the magic and the moral of ME MYSELF I which made David Roberts immediately want to be a part of the projectÖ "not to mention a fabulous script, a challenging character, and the chance to work with Pip Karmel, who I was really curious about because of her connection with Shine."
In his role of Robert, David was required to step into the shoes of a family man to whom status is very important.
"He's a successful middle class architect, and he's in the archetypal situation in that he's in his mid-to-late 30's, he has three lovely children and he's stable, but he's become very selfish and forgetful and negligent in his relationship with his wife. He's had an affair in the past and that has done some serious damage to the marriage," David says.
"It comes as a shock to a lot of men that they haven't nurtured their relationships because they have been too interested in their careers, and that they have taken their partners for granted and have lost the spark."
"The film is about wisdom and maturity and is specifically targeted at people who are at a time in their life when, perhaps to avoid a mid-life crisis, you must learn from what you have done," he says.
An actor who has worked extensively in theatre and television, David Roberts says the experience of his first major role in a feature film was edifying for the sheer attention to detail in filmmaking.
"The process is exhaustive from wardrobe to make-up sound, and particularly, for me, the performance and the depth of understanding of characters," he said.
"Working with Rachel was fantastic, she has a work ethic that is not only absolutely professional. It's incredibly exhausting in terms of understanding what is happening from moment to moment, way past the point where you just say your lines."
"We were always questioning what was going on in each scene, how it fitted in with the journey of the characters, and how it furthered the story," he said.
"Pip has done an amazing job and she immediately qualifies as an actors' director because she spends the time with you and want to find the specifics of the relationships between characters."
"She's insightful in terms of human psychology, incredibly patient, and has a beautiful, unhurried energy to be around. It was an absolutely joyful experience."
David Roberts' theatre credits include As You Like It, Macbeth, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, The Incorruptible, and The John Wayne Principle. His television credits include Wildside, The Man From Snowy River, Seven Deadly Sins - Lust, and Law of The Land.
