The screenplay is an adaptation of Fraser's internationally successul play, "Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love." Fraser's play was produced in every major Canadian city, as well as in New York, Chicago, Washington, and various other American cities. Abroad, it has been staged in Germany, Italy, Scotland, England, Japan, and New Zealand. "No matter what language the play is read in," says Fraser, "people always identify with the lives I am portraying."
Fraser gives much credit to Denys Arcand for the LOVE & HUMAN REMAINS screenplay. "Denys was very involved from the beginning. He took me through the screenwriting process, and showed me how to make the story cinematic." Fraser was born in Alberta, and is a descendant of the famous explorer Simon Fraser. He began his professional writing career at age 18 with the production of his first play, "Mutants." His other plays include "With Love from Your Son," "Two Pariahs," "Wolfboy," "Rude Noises (for a Blank Generation)," "Chainsaw Love," "Young Art," "Prom Night of the Living Dead," and "The Ugly Man," all of which have been staged across Canada. Fraser also wrote a stage musical of the 1978 Craig Russell film, OUTRAGEOUS.
Of his writing, Fraser says, "there is a general theme which runs through my work. My characters are always struggling to find a way to fit in society -- to make society work for them. They are creating a new kind of family. My work is normally typified as dark and quirky, although I don't quite see that. I have also written for children's theater."
Fraser's most recent success is the play, "Poor Super Man," which TIME MAGAZINE called "one of the best plays of 1994." The play was a tremendous hit during its London run. It has also had a successful run in Cincinnati, and is scheduled to open in Toronto, Washington, DC, and New York. According to Fraser, "Poor Super Man" is an "unofficial sequel" to LOVE AND HUMAN REMAINS. "The character of David is revisited at a later time in his life," says Fraser. "But this story doesn't pick up the other characters from the movie. It's more of a spiritual sequel."
Fraser has completed a screenplay entitled, BEAUTY, for Touchstone Pictures. He is writting "Insomnia," a late-night adult soap opera, for Showtime; and is writing a screenplay entitled OUR MAN IN MANILA, for Alliance Communications.
