AN OPEN ENDING For Agnieszka Holland, one of the most inviting aspects of The Third Miracle was the idea that at the end film the abiding sense of mystery remains just that: a lingering mystery. "What I wanted for the ending was an emotional catharsis, not an intellectual statement," she states. "Faith is about the interior state and it cannot be intellectualized. I want people be moved. I think this is the most important thing to me – that the audience feels they have a right not to have a precise answer or judgment. They can make their own interpretation, interject their own idea of what the 'third miracle' might be or if it has even happened. Is it Frank that is the miracle? Is it Roxanna's baby? Or is it yet to come? It's entirely open to the sensitivities of the viewers." For many familiar with Holland's work, the uplifting nature of The Third Miracle may seem a new course, but she feels it reflects the full breadth of her point of view strongly. "I think sometimes you have to give people some hope," she says. "And I think that in many ways it is more satisfactory for me to show something beautiful and mysterious on the other side of the despair I so often see when I look around."
