Bauer BBQ Part #2: Gus & Families!

The 2003 Bauer BBQ will be a week long blowout of patriotic festivities, romantic reunions and grisly discoveries. Naturally, SoapCity is here to bring you all the behind-the-scenes action!

In part two of our continuing celebration, we asked 2003 Daytime Emmy nominee Ricky Paull Goldin what uniquely-Gus thoughts are going through the new Spaulding's mind on this patriotic holiday.

The answer, it turned out, was two-fold.

First and foremost, Gus is at the Bauer BBQ to smoke out a killer. Reveals Ricky, "Everybody Gus looks at, to him, is a potential suspect. Gus sees people in a different way. You know how the eye of a fly has many prisms? Gus looks at things like that. He looks at situations and he surmises things in his own way. Either he's living in his own world or it's a talent that he's got. He knows that Eden is capable of murder, but he also knows that she's innocent. Ben is a mystery to him right now. If he's the killer then he's done a pretty good job up to now of disguising it.

But there is another mystery in Gus's life, and that is his newfound relationship with biological father, Alan Spaulding.

"With Gus," Ricky shares, "You're dealing with a man who has a lot of walls up. He has issues, like not having a father for 30 years. And sometimes that's going to cloud his judgment. When it comes to Alan and Phillip, he's taking the high road, telling Alan, "Listen, you shouldn't really shut your son Phillip out. Don't talk about it to me, have this discussion with Phillip. You want to take me under your wing to take over the company, but you should be talking to Phillip. I just want to know you. I just want a father." Unfortunately, the Alan and Gus relationship has taken its toll on Gus's relationship with Harley. Gus believes that his love is so strong that it can handle all of that. But Harley is panicked that it will take a toll, like it has before with her and the (other; Alan-Michael, Phillip) Spaulding boys, especially with Alan at the helm."
