Guiding Light:
Me and My Character
Nancy St. Alban

Nancy St. Alban celebrated her second anniversary of playing Michelle
Bauer on Sept. 29. In honor of the occasion, we sat down with the GL star
to dish about some of the controversies surrounding the break-up of one-time
super couple, Michelle and Danny Santos (Paul Anthony Stewart).
SoapCityAlina: How has Michelle changed from who she was when
you first started playing her two years ago?
Nancy St. Alban: Michelle has matured a lot. She's become a mother.
I think motherhood and that responsibility have really caused her a lot
of growth, in a good way. She's still innately the same person -- she's
a Bauer through and through. But I think she's definitely broadened her
horizons as far as her maturity.
SCA: How have her feelings for Danny changed?
NSA: It was always back and forth with Danny. She was not accepting
of his lifestyle, not accepting at all. But, then she became accepting
when she realized how important it was to have a family, to have a father
for her son, and she became much more open-minded, like with the whole
Spaulding thing that we did. She just really opened her mind to realizing
that sometimes it's not just black and white. But now she's come full
circle again and realized that Danny may be a good person, but you don't
want that business so close to your family when you are raising a child.
SCA: As an actress, how do you feel about Danny and Michelle breaking
up?
NSA: The breakup scenes were very challenging and very fun to play
because they were well-written. It's nice to be able to have that challenge
as an actor, although when it goes on too long, it's very painful. You
take a lot of it home and, after a while, it's like: "I can't cry
anymore, it hurts too much." On the other hand, I didn't like playing
those scenes because I don't like the fact that Danny and Michelle broke
up. I think they are breaking us up because of the story, to keep the
story interesting.
SCA: How do you feel about rumors that Danny and Michelle were
broken up because of your co-star, Laura Wright (Cassie), wanting to work
with Paul?
NSA: Whether Laura wants to work with Paul or not, they still would
have broken us up. I don't think she's responsible for that by any means.
But I know the fans want Michelle and Danny together. I certainly hope
they continue to speak their minds so the writers and producers realize
that they are an important couple, because I think they are a great couple.
