GL’s Michael Swan: All in the P&G Family

Michael Swan

Playing mystery men seems to be a theme for Michael Swan when it comes to CBS soaps. After his portrayal of the mysterious Duncan McKechnie on As the World Turns from 1986-1995, he went on to play the equally enigmatic Adam Alexander on The Bold and the Beautiful. And now he's raising eyebrows all over Springfield as secretive Spaulding exec Brad Green. We caught up with Michael Swan to talk about being back in the P&G fold, and to shed some light on his latest role.

You've had a steady run on soaps. (Swan played Duncan McKechnie on ATWT from 1986-1995, Bishop John Carpenter on One Life to Live from 1996-1997 and Adam Alexander on B&B from 1998-2000, reprising the role briefly in 2001 and again in 2002) What have you been up to since your last role?

There wasn't much time between The Bold and the Beautiful and Guiding Light. When I'm not working on soaps, I'm acting in other venues. And writing. I also represent a vast majority of Americans that love RVs. But mostly what I'm occupied with is writing. I have two screenplays that are in pre-production. I do what all actors do. I audition, and wait to see what happens afterwards.

How does it feel to be back in the P&G family?

I'm so excited about this character. There's so much stuff going on here, so I'm just really happy to be here. And there are so many people who are on this show that used to be on As the World Turns that are now in production, directing capacities.

What is it that you love about the medium of soaps?

Real emotions, it's what's still fun about soaps. Because we still get to do it. We get to emote. Take chances. Get a little wild. Let's pray that the soaps continue to elevate their core audience, the baby boomers. Because that's what the strengths of these shows are. How much these shows were passed on, viewers, from generation to generation.

What's it been like working with the cast and crew?

It's great seeing old friends like Frank Dicopulous [Frank], Crystal Chappell [Olivia], two of the directors here were on ATWT when I was there. Crystal was on OLTL [as Bishop Carpenter's daughter Maggie] when I was there. And one of the producers here used to be an intern on ATWT. So it's kind of like old home week. Kim [Zimmer, Reva] and I used to sing in a singing group called "The Singing Soap Opera Stars." It feels like the same family because it is a P&G family.

You mentioned seeing Crystal Chappell again. Any plans on an on-screen reunion with your former OLTL offspring?

Oh, I have no idea. That's up to the writers. We'll see if we get together. We'll see if Tonja Walker [ex-Alex, OLTL] and I get together... she actually plays my wife.

What can you tell us about the Brad Green character?

I think he's so misunderstood. I hope the mystery gets deeper, I absolutely hope so.;-)
