As a resident at Cedars Hospital, Mel clashes immediately with
Rick Bauer; however, they soon become friends as they learn to appreciate
their differing approaches to medicine and life. While she loves
her parents deeply, she deals with her father's tendency to want
to control her life.

Mel takes her life into her own hands and lets herself fall for
Rick Bauer. Mel treats Catalina, who loses her baby. Despite concern
from her family that he is older, she asks Rick to marry her. Her
concern for Rick heightens when she sees signs of a fatal heart condition.
The two wed in the hospital as Rick waits for a heart donor. Later,
Mel is suspected of pulling the plug on Richard Winslow to procure
