Beth was abused by her stepfather, Bradley Raines, during her childhood.
She ended up in Cedars hospital after one of Bradley's rages, where
she roomed with Mindy Lewis. She met Phillip and Rick through Mindy.
Eventually all four became close knit buddies, "the four musketeers."

| 1983 |
Beth doesn't tell her mother, Lillian, what really
happened to make her end up in the hospital. Beth was named Queen
at the senior prom with Phillip Spaulding being her King. She and
Phillip finally confess their feelings to each other after denying
it for a long time. Beth is raped by her stepfather during one of
his rages and rejects Phillip out of shame afterwards. Beth moves
out of the house, but Bradley orders her to move back in. Phillip
gets her out of the house and they went to New York. |
| 1984 |
Beth tells Phillip what Bradley did to her. They pledge
their love for each other with Phillip promising to protect her. However,
Bradley takes them. Phillip has a violent fight with him and Bradley
ends up hanging over a cliff. Beth and Phillip save him and warn him
to back off. Beth accepts Phillip's marriage proposal. Lillian divorces
Bradley. Beth tutors a street kid named Lujack. She and Phillip break
up after it is revealed that Mindy is carrying Phillip's child and
Philip tells her that he has to marry Mindy. Beth begins dating Lujack
and is blinded and injured in an explosion incident. |
| 1985 |
Beth and Phillip begin to get close again, but India
von Halkein breaks them up. Beth rejects Phillip's advances. She doesn't
tell Phillip that she knows the truth behind her becoming blind. She
helps Lujack track down India. Beth designs a logo for Lujack's music
video. She is later held hostage, but saved by Lujack, Kyle and Kurt.

| 1986 |
Beth dumps Jackson. She is touched when Phillip writes
a novel about their love story. They once again became engaged. Beth
works at a museum for Professor Blackburn, who later kidnaps her.
Phillip searches for her, but Alan sets it up so it looks like she
died. |
| 1989 |
Paintings of Beth are made and Phillip seeks to find
her. Beth, suffering from amnesia and aphasia, comes back to Springfield
with an architect named Neil Everest and things become familiar. Bradley
apologizes to Beth for what he did to her. Beth has a flashback of
Bradley beating her and slugs him one. Rick and Phillip find Beth,
who is engaged to Neil. Beth regains her memory and the ability to
speak. She makes amends with Bradley. |
| 1990 |
Beth recalls her kidnapping with the help of Neil.
She reveals that she killed Professor Blackburn when he tried to attack
her. Beth asks Blake to give Phillip a divorce, but she refuses. She
turns Phillip down. They make love. She finds out later she is pregnant.
She thought the baby was Neil's and told Phillip, who wanted to pass
the child off as his. Beth was ecstatic to learn that the baby she
was carrying was really Phillip's child, not Neil's. Rick got closer
to Beth after Phillip staged his death to escape jail time. They got
married. Beth explained to Phillip who later returned to Springfield
why she married Rick. Beth gave birth to a daughter, Lizzie Spaulding.
Rick and Beth divorced; she and Phillip asked Rick to be their child's
godfather. |
| 1991 |
Beth and Phillip marry then take off for Arizona with
their daughter to serve their sentences. |
| 1997 |
Beth learns from her mother that Phillip is dating
and shows up in Springfield with daughter Lizzie. Beth and Lizzie
move into the Spaulding mansion. Beth is propositioned by Annie Dutton
to help get Phillip back. Beth begins dating Ben Warren, which makes
Phillip a little jealous. She announces to Phillip that she has decided
to stay in Springfield. |
| 1998 |
Beth feels she doesn't stand a chance Harley, but
Annie coerces her to snare Phillip from Harley. She is listed as a
suspect in Carl Stephen's murder, a man who used to abuse her. She
later finds out that Lizzie killed him in her defense. Beth isn't
pleased Lizzie has been asked to be in Phillip and Harley's wedding,
but accepts it. |
| 1999 |
Beth takes advantage of Matt Reardon's marital problems
and makes a play for him. She meets Jim Lemay and starts to date him.
Beth proposes to Jim but he turns her down and they end their relationship.
She and Jim eventually reconcile and plan to move in together. During
a flight above San Cristobel, Beth, Jim and Phillip's plane crashes.
While Jim goes for help, Beth and Phillip make love, thinking they
are going to die. After being rescued, Jim proposes to Beth. She accepts.

| 2000 |
Beth learns that she's pregnant and convinces a reluctant
Phillip to let her pretend that the baby is Jim's. Jim learns about
the pregnancy and insists that they marry immediately. Beth and Phillip
are devastated when they learn that Lizzie has leukemia. Phillip reveals
the truth about the baby when Jim refuses to allow labor to be induced
so that the baby can serve as a donor for Lizzie. The transplant is
a success and Lizzie survives, but Jim leaves Beth. The couple reconciles
but their happiness is short-lived when Jim dies a hero, saving her
children from a fire. |
| 2001 |
Beth can no longer resist the considerable charms
of Prince Edmund Winslow and conspires with him to jar his rightful
place on the throne of San Cristobel. |
| 2002 |
Beth ends up in the middle of a flash flood and is believed to
be dead. Edmund meets a woman named Lorelei who looks exactly like
Beth. He informs her about the money that Beth had and the two decide
to pair up and fool Springfield into thinking that Beth was not
really killed. Lorelei convinces everyone that she is Beth with
Edmund giving her all the details. Phillip slowly begins to fall
in love with her again. He notices some inconsistencies in her behavior
and soon the small things begin to pile up and he realizes that
this woman is an impostor. Lorelei is jailed with Edmund. In jail,
she has flashbacks of Beth's life. She and Edmund are released from
prison and go to Beth's silver mine to claim her fortune. Phillip
learns that Beth and Lorelei have the same fingerprints meaning
that she really is Beth. He follows her to the mine. Beth's personality
comes out to fight Lorelei's and Beth wins. She realizes that Lorelei
was a personality she picked up because it was stronger than Beth's.
She returns to Springfield with Phillip. The pair feel the attraction
between them and eventually give in to their love. Just when it
looks like their relationship is back on track, a face pops up from
Beth's Lorelei past -- Bill Lewis!
