| Backstory: |
Ben was born in 1987 to biological parents Maeve Stoddard, an heiress
and then owner of the Springfield Journal, and Kyle Sampson,
a business tycoon. When a pregnant Maeve realized that her husband,
Kyle, was in love with Reva Shayne, Maeve lied to Kyle, telling him
their baby was stillborn. She demanded a divorce and Kyle complied.
Maeve secretly gave birth to Ben and asked a friend, Dr. Louie Darnell,
to pass the baby off as an orphaned cousin. Maeve then proceeded to
"adopt" Ben. Maeve revealed the truth about the baby at
Kyle's wedding to Reva. Having lost Reva, a bitter Kyle left town
for good, laying no claim to son Ben. In 1988, Maeve fell in love
with Fletcher Reade. Moments after they were married at the Bauer
barbecue, Maeve hopped into a helicopter to cover a news story and
went down with the chopper. Julia Stoddard, Maeve's mother, attempted
to take custody of Ben, but Fletcher fought her and ultimately, retained
custody. |
