Blue. Jesse finds Michelle's wallet and is later mistakenly arrested
for pickpocketing. When Michelle hears of his arrest, she helps
a reluctant Jesse strike a deal with the judge: she'll teach Jesse
to read in exchange for dropping the charges. The two fall in love
despite their families' objections but in time, Jesse earns the
respect of Michelle's brother, Rick. Jesse and Michelle are both
shocked to learn that Jesse is her mother's heart recipient.

Michelle is blinded in a fire at the Lewis house. Afraid that her

hides her blindness from him and runs away to learn to live on her
own at the Institute of the Blind. Jesse discovers Michelle's secret
and assumes the guise of a Spanish-speaking orderly named Carlos
to get close to Michelle again.
Michelle and Drew Jacobs accidentally kill mobster Mick Santos
in self-defense. Danny Santos comes to town to find out who killed
his brother. When Danny learns the truth, he kidnaps Michelle to

Michelle to marry him.

Drew blames Michelle for the death of her father, Ben, and their
friendship is greatly strained. Despite Ross Marler's best legal efforts,

and with Rick's help, she and Danny escape to San Cristobel. Danny
accidentally shoots Jesse in his attempt to protect Michelle and she
insists on accompanying an injured Jesse back to Springfield. At the
airport, Michelle runs into her biological mother, Claire Ramsey but
she refuses Claire's attempts to befriend her. At long last, the prosecution's

her to testify against the mob in exchange for her freedom and Danny's
freedom from the mob but Carmen is shot and killed on Michelle's doorstep
before she can enter the witness protection program. Soon after, a
pregnant Michelle loses her baby. Danny's need for vengeance against
those responsible for Carmen's death leaves Danny torn between the
mob and his loyalty to Michelle. A few months later, when a back-from-the-dead
Carmen kidnaps Michelle, Danny saves her by killing his mother. Guilt-laden,
Danny refuses to reunite with her and she leaves town. When a pregnant
Michelle returns home, Danny fights his feelings for her. |

him behind bars. Michelle stands by Danny when he is arrested and
