Beth immediately caught the eye of Phillip and his boarding school friend Rick Bauer, and soon became part of their group, which would later be nicknamed "The Four Musketeers."
In the beginning, Beth escorted Rick to the high school prom, but she had her heart set on Mindy's date, Phillip. When Phillip and Beth were crowned Prom King and Queen, they knew that they were meant to be together. Maintaining a relationship, however, proved to be a difficult challenge.
Beth's unforgiving stepfather, Bradley, prohibited her from dating Phillip. Unable to see each other, the relationship suffered and a frustrated Phillip soon gave in to Mindy's seduction. When Bradley raped Beth in a fit of rage, she further distanced herself from Phillip. In time, Beth opened up to Phillip and told him the truth and "The Four Musketeers" fled to New York to escape Bradley, who was later put in jail. Phillip and Beth planned to marry but she called off the wedding when she overheard that Mindy was pregnant with Phillip's child.
Concerned with doing "the right thing," Phillip married Mindy to love and support her during her pregnancy. When she suffered a miscarriage, however, the relationship couldn't hold together and they divorced soon after. Phillip turned his attention back towards Beth and was devastated to learn that she was dating Lujack, a gang leader with a heart of gold.
When Phillip caused an explosion aimed at Lujack that accidentally blinded Beth, he was blackmailed into marrying Alexandra's stepdaughter, the devilish India Von Halkein. Beth eventually regained her sight and resumed her relationship with Lujack who was busy pursuing a career in music. Unfortunately, Lujack was wounded in an explosion trying to save Beth and died in Beth's arms.
After Phillip escaped his relationship with India, he and Beth briefly reunited before she was kidnapped in an elaborate art smuggling scam. She was presumed dead when her boat sunk and after a period of mourning, Phillip married Roger Thorpe's daughter, Blake. In reality, Beth was suffering from amnesia and in the care of an architect named Neil Everest. When the couple arrived in Springfield, Phillip thought he was hallucinating. Blake was determined to hang on to her husband and she had him committed. Later, she joined forces with Neil to ensure that Beth and Phillip would be kept apart. The couple reunited, however, and planned to marry despite the forces against them. When Neil was killed in an explosion and Phillip was framed for the murder, Rick came to their rescue and helped Phillip fake his own death to escape prosecution.
On Valentine's Day, 1991, Phillip and Beth exchanged vows and were legally married. The newlyweds and their baby girl, Lizzie, traveled to Arizona where they did community service to compensate for the fraud surrounding Phillip's supposed death. The couple split while in Arizona and Phillip returned to Springfield alone. Both remarried but a devastating plane accident led the two to believe they would never be rescued and they turned to each other for comfort. Once safely back in Springfield, the two kept their secret, despite being blackmailed by Edmund Winslow, but the truth was eventually revealed when Beth learned she was pregnant and that the child she carried could help save the life of Lizzie, who was suffering from leukemia. Their marriages suffered a great deal but Beth has reunited with her husband, Jim Lemay, while Phillip and his wife, Harley, are still struggling with their decision to make their marriage work.
