GL's Kim Zimmer: Here Comes Her Son

Recently, Kim Zimmer (Reva) took the concept of "bring your son to work" to a whole new level, literally bringing her son Jake Weary to work -- on Guiding Light! The results of this mother-son collaboration will be seen on the Tuesday, Nov. 11 episode of Guiding Light, when Weary makes his television debut. We caught up with Zimmer and Weary to find out about his big break, what it's like working together and what he really thinks of the soap opera.

How did this role come about?

Kim Zimmer: Alan Locher [Director of PR for PGP] saw this part in the breakdown, and the character's name was Jake, and I don't know that made him go "Whoa." It was originally written for an eight-year old with his mother. When Alan read the breakdown, he said this could be a great little thing for Jake to do, because he knew Jake was acting. So he called us first and said "Is this something that you want to pursue?" And we discussed it, all three of us, AC [Weary, Zimmer's husband], Jake and myself, and we agreed that yep, it would be a good idea. So they rewrote it for Jake, who's thirteen, because I don't think he would have liked being an eight-year old at this point, you know, thirteen-year olds. They might as well be twenty! [Laughs] They rewrote it, and they rewrote it beautifully, and they were nice little scenes for him to have as his first "reel." [Then, to Jake] I'm sorry, I'm doing all the talking!

So, is this is your first onscreen appearance?

Jake Weary: Yep.

Have you watched your mom on the show?

Jake Weary: No, not exactly.

Kim Zimmer: They're too busy to watch soap operas.

Jake Weary: I'm usually at school when it's on.

What was it like working together? Were you intimidated at all?

Jake Weary: Yeah, it made me a lot more nervous, working with her. It's just weird.

Kim Zimmer: Because I'm so scary! I didn't help you at all?

Jake Weary: No.

Kim Zimmer: His father does most of that, AC is a director, so he really took him under his wing. All I had to do is watch. It was just great to be able to watch him work. I was very impressed. He's natural.

How do you feel about Jake entering "the biz"?

Kim Zimmer: What are you gonna do? My parents were like, what are we gonna do? There's no stopping him. He makes his own movies. He has a group of friends that make their own movies.

Jake Weary: We have a series of spoofs that we do.

Kim Zimmer: A fake Matrix.

Jake Weary: The Faketrix.

What do your friends have to say about your daytime debut?

Jake Weary: All of my friends are pretty talented actors. They're usually the leads in all the plays. They were excited. They weren't jealous, because they're my best friends. They were really excited for me.

So, you think they'll tape it?

Jake Weary: I don't know about that!

So that means no plans to get together for a viewing party?

Kim Zimmer: He'll miss school! But it's the grandmas and the grandpas that are really waiting with baited breath, being able to see the grandson on the show.

Any plans to make this a recurring role? Would you like to come back?

Jake Weary: I really want to make real movies.

Kim Zimmer: Because what we do isn't real! It's just a soap opera!

Jake Weary: It's so phony, the soap opera.

Kim Zimmer: [Laughs] Hey! Hey!
