GL: John Edward Sees the Light
Recently, Guiding Light had the ultimate "cross over" when the crew of Crossing Over With John Edward set up shop for a special week of Guiding Light-themed shows, airing the week of November 17-21. A mini-gallery was held on the GL set, and John held readings with members of the cast and crew. We caught up with John and some of the participants to get their thoughts on this landmark event.
When asked how this all came about, Edward explained, "I've been a fan of the show since I was a kid, and just by a bunch of weird, interesting connections, my life and GL just kept intersecting. And it got to a point where it became funny, and one of the publicists said 'You should just come on the show and do something with us.' And to make a long story short, we ended up putting this gallery together."
Of course, when dealing with the concept of communication to "the other side," there's bound to be some skepticism. When asked, Edward answered, " I would hope that they were all skeptical. I think it's important for everybody to approach it with a healthy sense of skepticism." Edward raved about the level of participation that the GL cast and crew put forward. "They asked phenomenal questions. They did their homework -- it's part of who they are, too. Questions about the subject matter. Religion, spirituality and reincarnation, the process, recognition of information, how to know when you're experiencing something and when you're not experiencing something, so you don't just think everything is a sign."
Various cast members weighed in on the event. Marj Dusay (Alex) opened up about her reading. "It's exhausting and exhilarating. He made the whole presentation so much more honorable and that I liked, because me being a skeptic and somewhat of a cynic, hopefully with a sense of humor, after all these years in showbiz," laughed Dusay, "that it was honorable. So I think everyone in there feels that it was an experience that none of us are sorry we had. And grateful we had." About the read itself, she said, "The things that came towards me were so exact, precise, personal from my left foot, to my back in a certain area, the dynamics of the family. I, like everyone else, went in there saying expect nothing except everything. And I kept trying to say expect nothing... so I was looking in both directions. You want something but it's okay if you don't get it. You're discombobulated when you go in. And I think it will take some hours to go down."
Even those who didn't have a read felt affected by the process. Daniel Cosgrove (Bill) gave the spectator's perspective. "Apparently a lot of people were truly moved and affected. I think everyone left there kind of feeling good afterwards. And I think that's what he does. He kind of brings a comfort and therapy to these people." Lindsey McKeon (Marah) observed, "It was an amazing experience. It was so emotional. It was just so emotional hearing other people's stories."
Edward enthused about the experience, "I think it's going to be a treat for the Crossing Over viewers to get a chance to see the behind the scenes aspect of a show that's special to me. And hopefully those who don't watch GL that might be fans of Crossing Over will tune into GL to see what they're doing with Reva and the storyline and the intuition/psychic thing that she's got going on as well." He summed up his thoughts on the whole experience by saying, "I think it's really ironic. Here I am, a medium, doing a show called Crossing Over, which deals with spirituality, with the longest running daytime soap opera, whose initial beginnings were spirituality. So to me it's a unique, generational passing down of the message that Irna Philips, and the initial energy put forth, that is still intact."
