Doug Ikeler
Visual Effects Supervisor
Sony Pictures Imageworks

Doug Ikeler, visual effects supervisor, is currently working on Hotel Transylvania for Sony Pictures Animation where he is responsible for the overall look, style and delivery of all digital imagery. Before his work on Hotel Transylvania, Ikeler was visual effects supervisor on SPA’s inaugural release Open Season.

Prior to joining Sony Pictures Imageworks in 2003, Ikeler was effects designer and supervisor on DreamWorks’ The Road to El Dorado. The water system he developed and animated for the feature film, garnered him an Annie Award nomination for Individual Achievement for Effects Animation in 2000. While at DreamWorks, Ikeler was also effects supervisor on Sinbad and an effects and look development artist on The Prince of Egypt.

In 1994, Ikeler worked at Rhythm & Hues as a modeler on his first 3D feature, Babe. Before this, he was in London at Steven Spielberg’s Amblimation where he supervised compositing and digital ink and paint on An American Tail: Fievel Goes West and We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story as well as the special effects for Balto.

In 1988, Ikeler landed his first job out of school at American Film Technologies, where he specialized in colorizing the effects and transitions used in films that were colorized. That technology led to the early digital ink and paint systems used for cel painting in animated movies.

Ikeler has presented his digital effects to a number of panels and film festivals, including most recently 2006 SIGGRAPH and FMX in Germany.

He attended San Diego State studying Information Systems and La Jolla Academy of Arts in San Diego for Graphic Design.
