We asked the city of New York if they would let us swing our stunt people through the streets of Manhattan. They said no. It was obvious that if we were to take the audience on a web tour of Manhattan's architectural canyons, that we would have to make a virtual version of at least part of the city.

I thought of each frame of animation as a sculptural pose, with every joint of the fingers capable of expression. In this film, we utilized everything available to convey emotion because facial expression would be imperceptible on our masked SPIDER-MAN. All of this emotion had to be suggested through the body.
- Anthony LaMolinara, Animation Supervisor
Our virtual environments were meant to substitute for plates when motion picture photography was not available. In many cases, however, these synthetic worlds ended up being important elements of the shots in their own right. In every case, the final result was meant to look photographic and grounded in the world every moviegoer lives in.
