Which Brings Us To Today by Julie Larson (Jonathan Larson's sister)

Which brings us to today:

We are at the shoot every day. The mood is warm and inclusive and very family-oriented. It is joyful to watch the movie actually being realized. It is deeply meaningful for us to have so many of the original cast members together again and our two new members, Tracie and Rosario fit right in and their talent is going to blow you away! Everything looks wonderful and is completely authentic; the music sounds fantastic and the film is being shot with creative artistry. This is a set full of unbelievably gifted individuals. True professionals all, but beyond that, this is a group of the most decent human beings I've ever encountered. What more could we ask for?

I've been asked if it's what we expected. I can only say this - I had no idea what to expect. I deliberately let go of anticipating what it would be or trying to compare it to the stage play - that stands on its own and continues to be a wonderful testament to my brother and all the amazingly talented people who originally brought RENT to life. The movie is the next chapter on this journey and all I can say is that everything I've seen and heard so far exceeds any possible expectations. I truly believe my brother would be extremely proud.

I just want to thank you for taking the time to write these updates for the eager public. It is extremely interesting to read these updates, break a leg with the rest of the production schedule!

We all expect the best from this movie, because how could anything so special ever be less than amazing? It is great that all of the cast is getting along and that the chemistry is still there.

November 11, 2005! My friends and I will WILL be there, first in line, to see this movie!

I am very glad you're pleased with this film. It gives RENT-Heads the same ease you are feeling.

Here's to a great movie.
Here's to Jonathan Larson's legacy.
Here's to RENT.

Rent has already changed my life so much! I can't wait for the movie. I had the opportunity to finally see it on Broadway in March and it brought tears to my eyes. The show is truly a beautiful work of art! The movie will be amazing too! Thanks for taking the time to keep all of us posted...we have been looking for information on it for months!

As several other have said thank you so much for putting your time into giving us the 411 on this project. i'm sure your brother would be very proud of what RENT has become and how it has spoken to so many people. I know it has made a difference in my life. Take care and God bless.

I imagine you're tired of having people say they're sorry for what happened to Jonathan. I just today finished reading the interview you gave for the RENT book, though, and I have to say something akin to it.

It ripped me apart, even though I never met him myself, to realize that there was so much more he could--should have done. My only wish is that there was something--anything--that I could do to ensure his message continues.

Here's to everyone who does exactly that.

I cannot wait for this movie to come out. Thank you, all the cast and crew and Jonathan Larson, for giving all of us fanatics more to rant about for the next ten years.

Thank you Jonathan Larson.
Thank you Idina, Anthony, Adam, Rosario, Wilson Jermaine, and everyone else for doing this. For doing this for Jonathan. For his fans. For the world...
Thank you to Jonathan's family for letting them do this.
Thank you God for Jonathan Larson...

has it ever been discussed that a really great day to open the movie would be December 24th, 9 PM, eastern standard time? Just wondering.

Tonight i turned on the television and happened upon a story about Rent - the movie, currently being made. I almost fell out of my chair! I was fortunate enough to see a version of this (with Constantine from Amer Idol, no less) last year in Beverly Hills, and another production this year in Orange County.

I cannot tell you how much i LOVE this show - the music, the talent of those in the show. I am INCREDIBLY excited to have found out about the movie version and to have found this blog so i may keep up with the filming. Thank you so very much for keeping up apprised and allowing us to become a part of the process.

November is my birthday..this will be my gift - to get out the moment its released and see this movie - no doubt over and over again.

Thank you again, all, for making this movie and sharing your talent with us. Jonathan, may you be at peace and may you be loving how much we all love this wonderful musical!

No day like today!!!

Posted by: Bobbie on 05/19/05 at 09:18 PM

Krista Lynn just made me laugh out loud with the comment. But that would be an awesome time for it to open. And it should close a year later at December 24th, 10PM Eastern Standard time. =P
Thanks for the update, have fun during the filming!

What a wonderful idea to put together a blog! This is so great of you all to post updates on the filming, it makes me feel kind of like I'm part of the shoot.

Thank you so much for doing this movie. I have been a RENT fan since the beginning. I am sure you hear this all the time, but RENT has had such an impact on my life I couldn't imagine this show not existing.

Posted by: Lauren on 05/20/05 at 01:17 PM

This will be an extremely long comment, sorry - please bear with me!

When I first saw Rent on stage I was in awe of how accurately Jonathan had portrayed the lives of New Yorkers, and how he had also created a universal understanding between the audience and characters.

When I returned from my trip to New York I brought back many memories, and one of the most conspicious ones was the performance of Rent. I came to realise that it was much more than just a musical, and after purchasing the soundtrack and listening to it day and night I was enlightened by the philosophy Jonathan had seeded into it.

Rent has made me increasingly aware of the world around me with just one simple moral, and for that I thank Jonathan. No other musical has stirred me that much, no other musical has created so much thought.

You must be extremely proud of your brother; I'm sure he has moved many people like he has moved me. That is why, nine years later, his musical is still recognised as one of the finest on the broadway, and younger generations flock to see it - it is timeless and heartwarming. I wait in excited anticipation for the movie - unfortunately it will be out a few months later than the USA release, but it is well worth the wait.

I'm so gald that you are a part of this production, if they would have made it without your family involved I would have have had very little faith in how well it would have portrayed the message of RENT but with you(and the original cast, but mostly you) on board i have no fears.
Thank you so much

Thank you for your wonderful updates, Julie, and yes, I think we all know how proud your brother would be of his amazing project coming to life. I am so glad to hear that things are going so well!

Thank you, so so so much, for taking the time with this blog. It makes me happy =) It's a great way to connect with all the Rent lovers.

I've a huge, huge Rent fan, and since I've never seen it on Broadway or on stage, and most likely never will *sob sob*, Rent coming out as a movie is a huge, wonderful, WONDERFUL thing!! Of course I know it'll be a completely different experience from live theatre, but it's Rent, and it's a movie, and a super crazy awesome cast, and I'm so excited for it! I can't wait till it comes out.

Also, having lived in New York for most of my life before I moved makes me feel a tiny special other kind of connection.

I believe with you that Jonathan would be SO proud of what he's done, and what everyone else has done since his work. He was a truly great person, and I'm using his "No day but today" motto as my own.

3 cheers!!

This show has touched the lives of so many people, including myself, and the movie will only continue to do the same. Your brother was a truly talented person and I'm sure this will make him proud! Thank you so much for taking the time to post on this board. I look forward to hearing more and can't wait to see the final product.

Wow! Thanks so much for taking time out of your day to write something to calm us Rentheads down about the movie. I can't wait until it's released; I was only introduced to Rent when I saw it a few months ago for my sweet sixteen. Now I'm totally obsessed with it and Tick Tick Boom. God bless Jonathon Larson, and may this movie carry on his legacy.

Thanks for posting Anthony. I first saw rent in 1997 on my 18th birthday and it was such a powerful piece of theatre. Now as I approach 26 I'm so glad to be able to get to see the film version an revisit Larson's Masterpiece. I'm also a fan of Anthony's and was at your last show. Congradulations on being a part of the film.

Theatre has always been a passion for me. Being that RENT is my favorite Broadway show (having seen it 6 times) Im scared to see the movie, in case it's a let down from the play. But then again, most of the original cast! I'm sure it cant be anything short of amazing, very excited to see it!

Posted by: Alye on 06/10/05 at 02:27 PM

I have to say i was worried and excited when I heard rent was going to be a movie. At first I heard rumors that Justin Timberlake was going to be in it... well now that I know so many of the original cast is returning (Especially Adam and Anthony) i have few worries and am counting down the minutes till the release! I'm so excited to be able to share Rent with my friends who other wise may have never got the chance to experience it in the theater!

Posted by: Stephanie on 06/10/05 at 09:54 PM

well i'm what some people would call a renthead, my names really michelle but since i saw rent on broadway i won't respond to anything but Mimi who taught me lifes short so have fun and live each day as if it were your last, maureen inspired meto become involved in theatre, Angel inspired me to live everyday filled w/love, joann taught me theres a time to be serious, collins taught me even when everything possible goes wrong try to keep peace, roger taught me not to be hardheaded and even if it takes time be able to egmit your wrong, Benny taught me theres good inside everyone, mark taught me sometimes its better to observe rather than be a part of, its better in the long run, and Jonathan Larson taught me to measure my life in love. if the movies half as good as the play it'll be AMAZING!!!

Posted by: mimi on 06/11/05 at 10:47 AM

RENT is a show that stands apart from others, and there is no doubt in my mind that the movie version will touch people in the same way that the musical has. Im so glad to hear that Jonathan's veiws and mind are right there as you carry his legacy to new heights. I await the premier and continue producing his teachings, and hte teachings of RENT

I can't tell you how excited I am about this film. Not only because my fav musical is being immortilised forever but also because it includes most of the glorious OBC. Thank you all for doing it and thank you for spreading Jonathon's message. The world needs to hear it more than ever at the moment. I live in Australia and our movies open on a Thursday here. How great would it be for it to open on Thursday December 1st - World Aids Day.

I cannot possibly tell you what RENT has meant to my life. I found RENT nine years ago, the first time I stepped foot in a real theatre with my mother. I wasn't even seeing a show, I was already working backstage, and I was 11. I heard people backstage mention it like they were sharing a fantastic secret only experiencers could share, so of course, I gave it a listen.
I did theatre because of RENT all the way through college. The poetry in RENT got me through my mother's death. I plan on opening a school for all arts.

It all started with RENT. I'm so glad the story will now be as accessible as the internet. The secret will be everyone's to cherish.

I applaud Jonathan.

I was first introduced to RENT while cleaning my room with my sister. She had seen it the day before and had to play it for me. I was so captured by the music that I demanded she tell me the entire story line. That christmas she bought me a copy of the CD cause i kept stealing hers. When i was filally given the chance to see it i already had the songs memorized and was belting them in the car ride while doing my own dances. Since then i have seen it six times and i vow to see it many more. The show is so unique because it lets the audience feel like they are performing along side the actors. To be able to make eye contact with the actors during Seasons of Love from the front row was amazing. I know that the movie will stay true to the show and Jonathon would be very proud. You are all part of such an amazing expierence that it makes us commom folk envious. I can not wait for November 11, 2005 because I will finally be able to see rent over and over without having to deal with the lincoln tunnel traffic. :) Treasure everyday you have on the set because with every scene you finish you are changing someones life.
No Day But Today,

Thank you for keeping Jonathan's life force true and forever. There is no greater mitzvah then the dedication you have given to keep a true tallent taken far to soon alive through out both the theater as well as this endever. I look forward to day I can once again experience the joy of RENT.

I am just sort of a red neck from Georgia which makes it kind of amazing for me to be posting here. I am just using this to make my point that the themes from RENT are quite universal. Those songs have touched me right to my soul, and I want to use this space to thank their creator. I was in a movie theatre tonight when all of the sudden I saw RENT right there on the screen. I was so happy, but my fiance thought I was losing my mind. Thanks Jonathan, and thanks Julie for seeing this done!

Julie, It is so touching to read your comments. I'm a longtime Renthead who was feeling a little nervous about this movie being made. Now, however, after seeing this site, watching the trailer and reading your blog entry, I have that feeling you get after they call your name in the lottery and you get that coveted rush ticket. I absolutely cannot wait for November to get here. I feel lucky to have been able to see both Rent and Tick, Tick Boom in New York and now I look forward to seeing the movie.

Posted by: Chris on 06/30/05 at 11:51 PM

RENT has truly changed my outlook on the world. The first time I heard it (on a two-hour bus trip to the Met) I was absolutely dumbfounded. Three months later, the day before my birthday, May 7, I finally saw it on Broadway and sobbed my way through it.

Wherever your brother is, I hope he gets my thanks.

I can't wait for the movie, thanks for keeping us posted.

thank you jonathan larson, youre deeply missed and greatly appreciated by so many people. R.I.P

sorry for the long post but here goes.

julie, you and your family must be so unbelievably proud of jonathan. he was obviously a man who touched many lives, not only through his music. i cannot wait to see the movie, i know it will be great because i know that you and the original cast members would never have let it go ahead if you thought it wasn't going to be what jonathan wanted. i know i'll be crying in the movie theatre when i see it. the first song i heard from rent was one song glory and i knew straight away that this had to be something good. after buying the soundtrack, i completely fell in love with it. the poignancy of the lyrics, the variety of the music, the richness and diversity of the characters. in the last three months i fulfilled two of my dreams, i saw rent on broadway and tick tick boom in london. i can only say that ttb made me appreciate rent even more, to know te struggle both in his work and in his life to get what he wanted and get rent on stage. jonathan is an inspiration to any aspiring writer, actor, musician. the greatest honour would be to play a roel in one of his shows, and i can only hope that one day i am allowed that honour. thank you so much for helping to keep jon's memory and music alive. all the love and thanks in the world, arlene x x x

I just wanted to say that seeing this come to fruition would have made Jonathan cry. Think about it - almost an entire generation who follow the message of this wonderful story. Personally, of all of my friends, only about 5 out of the 250 people I know either do not know or do not like RENT. It's amazing to see their faces light up when we talk about it.

I saw it at the newly renovated Hippodrome Theater in Baltimore, MD, and I was brought to tears. I knew the story, I knew the songs. But to see it, live, made me feel as if I was in the play itself.

Come intermission, I met a woman outside while we were huddling in the crowd of smokers. She said that she lived somewhere nearby, but it was a kind of shelter. She had a part-time job at a deli, making spare change at best, and the shelter collected $5 every month for rent from the members, most of which were recovering drug addicts. Just talking to her blew me away, and I asked how she could have afforded tickets for the show (mine had been around $55). She said there was a program started by Jonathan Larson to provide tickets to those with less money in the first two front rows of the theater. Her ticket was only $20, and half had been paid for by her NA sponser as a gift. She was crying by the time we went inside, and she told me that this musical had been of such comfort to her, with it's true-to-life depictions and heartwarming message of love.

Congradulations on the movie - I will be dragging each and every one of my friends to go see it.

And I'm also going to go look for her.

Bless you all.

Once I watched the special features about Jonathan's life and how much support his family provided, it brought me to tears. All of the stories that he still had to write and music to compose just overwhelmed me and now I want to be so involved with everything Rent is about. I want to help people and now I know even more that life should be lived to the fullest, each day.

I really wish I could have been old enough to experience and see Rent when it first debuted but the movie is amazing in itself. I saw the play this past February and I felt like I should get up on stage..Jonathan has made his play touch everyone's soul.

I am determined to see it as many times as i can but i will still try to make a difference in my own life each day because of Jonathan's inspiring words.
