Lynn and Cassie are on their way to a play when they meet Marina, a 14-year old street kid begging for money. When Lynn refuses, Marina walks away and gets into the car of a strange man who offers her money for sex. Wanting to help this girl, Lynn hires a private detective to locate her. Once she finds her, Lynn is shocked to discover that the girl's parents don't want her. Marina is placed in a therapeutic community. Lynn sees that none of her options are good; the therapeutic community has horrible conditions, and her previous foster parents abused her. Lynn decides that the best option for Marina is to live as an adult and be emancipated. The judge agrees. Though things look promising, Lynn checks on her a week later and finds she's back on the streets. Meanwhile, Danni represents a man fighting his ex-wife for custody of the embryos they had frozen while they were married. Because the man went though chemotherapy, he can no longer have children and knows the embryos are his last chance. His ex-wife refuses. When he realizes the case isn't going his way, he secretly has the embryos implanted in a surrogate mother. Even though he loses the case and has to pay a fine, he gets the chance to be a father. Lynn fights for clemency on behalf of Justin, a 25-year old who’s been sentenced to death for killing high school students in a shooting rampage. Though Lynn believes Justin’s crimes are unforgivable and he should never be let out of prison, she doesn’t believe that execution is the answer. One week before he is set to die, Lynn sets out to convince the governor to spare his life. She approaches the victims’ families and asks if one of them would testify that Justin should be show mercy. And even though Joe convinces a Federal Court to give Justin a 24-hour stay in order to plead their case to the clemency board, their efforts fail and clemency is denied. Justin will die for his crimes. Out of options, Lynn returns to the office, where she and the other members of the firm watch the clock while Justin’s sentence is carried out. When Randi’s daughter, Mary Beth, is injured from falling down a staircase Randi rushes to the hospital to give blood, hoping to save her daughter’s life. But Mary Beth refuses to take blood from the woman who murdered her father, and dies right in front of Randi’s eyes. At the wake, Mary Beth’s husband, Tim, is arrested for murder. It turns out that Mary Beth and Tim were fighting and Tim pushed Mary Beth down the stairs. Tim is allowed to make a deal with the D.A. when his father comes forward and admits that he abused Tim as a child. In turn, the D.A. lets Tim plead guilty to a lesser charge and he is only sentenced to four years. Randi can’t believe it.Not only did the murderer of her daughter get off with a laughable sentence, but her granddaughter, Annie, is being placed in the custody of Tim’s parents, who have confessed to abusing Tim. Randi wants full custody but discovers that Tim’s parents only admitted abuse behind closed doors and not incourt. Therefore, their statements cannot be used against them. Randi goes to prison and begs Tim to tell the truth about his father. She pleads with him to not let Annie grow up with the same man who abused him. Tim refuses to give Randi what she wants. The case looks bad for Randi, but Joe delivers a strong closing argument. The judge awards custody to Randi. Meanwhile, Rex’s client, Anna, is a well-known rock star, who is opening a drug rehabilitation clinic. The only problem is, she’s opening it in Beverly Hills, where the citizens are against having drug addicts in their town. Opposing counsel is so impressed with Rex and Danni’s arguments, that they agree to let the drug center stay. Also, Danni discovers that her chances of adopting Rapheal may be hurt when Rex turns in an unfavorable review of her. Lynn’s friend, Amanda, is recently divorced from her Native American husband, John. Though Amanda has been granted custody of their children, John feels the ruling was unfair and kidnaps the two children, taking them to his reservation. Since American Indian land is immune to government laws, the U.S. courts cannot enter the Indian land to arrest John nor take back the children. Lynn and Joe go to the tribal council to discuss away to work out this problem. The tribal council feels that the children would be better off living on the reservation. After days of discussion, Lynn comes up with another idea. When John leaves the reservation for a quick grocery trip, Lynn has him arrested and forces him to make a deal. John agrees to return the children but his tribe refuses to recognize the government’s order and denies the police access to the reservation. A stand-off occurs between the police and the reservation. In hopes of avoiding a gunfight, Lynn marches directly up to the front gates and demands to be allowed to entered. In the confusion, Lynn is shot, but solving this crisis is more important than her health. She convinces the tribe to come to a compromise with Amanda. Danni runs into her first obstacle when trying to adopt Raphael…her boyfriend Alex leaves her. A woman leaves her baby on the doorstep of the law firm, with a note attached: “Find my baby a home.” Later, the mother, Chloe, is found and arrested for child abandonment. Once again, she turns to Holt & Assoc. for help, this time asking them to represent her. Randi takes the case. The awful truth is that she was raped, and she hates her baby because he is a result of that abuse. Though she is eventually cleared of criminal charges, the father, Lee, then steps in and demands custody. Rather than let her child be raised by the man who raped her, Chloe now has to fight for custody. But because Lee was never actually convicted of rape, it can't be used in court, and it's Chloe that looks like the bad person. Just when they're about to give up hope, a deal is made that frees Lee of his reputation, and convinces him to release parental rights of his son. Finally, Chloe is able to do the best thing for her baby, and puts him up for adoption. Meanwhile, Raphael, a foster child that Danni helped six months ago, visits her, requesting her to be his foster mom. Initially, Danni is denied the request, but she has another idea: She is going to adopt him. See a clip of this episode! He is fighting for joint custody of the children that he had adopted with Jesse. Now, Jesse is leaving him to marry a woman and insists it will be better for the children to come with him. Even though they adopted the kids together, only Jesse’s name was on the adoption papers; which is something they had to do because the courts don’t recognize same sex unions. Therefore, Jesse is the only one recognized as the children’s legal parent. Jesse argues that he can provide the kids with a “normal household” with a mother and a father, Lynn argues that it doesn’t matter. Though the kids love Sean, they claim they would rather be with Jesse. They’ve already encountered teasing at school and the older boy, Jonas, admits that he’s afraid that if he stays with Sean, he could end up gay as well. Sean tells the judge that he will support Jonas, no matter if he is gay or straight. In a surprise decision, the judge awards full custody to Sean. They race in to the other room to discover that Mary’s son, Graham, has been shot in the head. Her other son, Charlie, had figured out how to open her gun safe, and while the boys were playing with the gun, it had accidentally gone off. The district attorney brings a case against Mary, claiming she was negligent in keeping the gun in a safe place. Rex defends her, arguing that Mary did the right thing by buying a gun safe and keeping the gun locked in it. He says that the gun safe was faulty, that it had a very simple code, and anyone could break into it…even a child. The courts find that mother did nothing wrong and drops the charges, but the ex-husband doesn’t agree. He files for sole custody of Charlie when he discovers that two days after Graham’s death, Mary went out and bought another gun. Lynn, who openly opposes guns, finds herself defending Mary.
