FX’s critically praised and award winning series THE SHIELD returns on Tuesdays beginning January 10 at 10 PM ET/PT. Joining the cast this season for a special starring role is Emmy Award winner Forest Whitaker, one of Hollywood’s most accomplished actors/directors/producers. FX has scheduled 11 episodes to launch this fifth season of THE SHIELD.
This season on THE SHIELD, Vic Mackey’s (Michael Chiklis) past crimes finally catch up with him. The Internal Affairs Division’s lead investigator, Jon Kavanaugh (Forest Whitaker) launches an attack on Vic Mackey and his Strike Team. Kavanaugh enlists the help of David Aceveda (Benito Martinez), then picks off the team one by one in his obsessed effort to nail Vic. Vic quickly realizes Kavanaugh just might be the guy to bring him down. This forces Vic to seek redemption, which he may or may not find in a relationship with defense attorney Becca Doyle (Laura Harring).
Detective Claudette Wyms (CCH Pounder) reveals she has been hiding a terminal illness from Detective Dutch Wagenbach (Jay Karnes). This illness is exacerbated by stress – exactly the kind of stress caused by being a lead detective. Dutch, who thought he had learned all he could from his partner, now realizes he has much more to learn from her – that there’s more to life than forcing the next confession.
When the season opens, we are surprised to find Officer Danny Sofer (Catherine Dent) six months pregnant, and refusing to disclose the identity of the father. Danny’s new role as watch commander ties her inextricably to the workings of the Barn and she comes to the realization that she may be stuck there permanently, because the streets of Farmington are no place for a single mother.
Officer Julien Lowe (Michael Jace) has come full circle and is now a training officer to Officer Tina Hanlon (Paula Garces), a young woman whose heart is in the right place, but who seems unable to handle the mean streets of Farmington.
For its entire fourth season, THE SHIELD averaged 3.2 million total viewers and 2.0 million Adults 18-49, ranking #7 and #5 among scripted series on basic cable, respectively. These numbers represented increases of +26% in total viewers and +16% in Adults 18-49 versus season three.
THE SHIELD, FX’s first original drama series, made history by becoming the first ad-supported cable series to win the 2003 Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Series. In its first season, Shawn Ryan (Writing) and Clark Johnson (Directing) received Emmy nominations, which were also firsts for basic cable in those categories. THE SHIELD has received two Television Critics Association nominations for Outstanding Achievement in Drama.
Series star Michael Chiklis received the 2003 Golden Globe Award, 2002 Emmy Award and 2002 TCA Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, all basic cable firsts. Chiklis received his second consecutive Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his work on season two and season three, as well as a SAG nomination.
In 2005, Glenn Close, who joined the cast of THE SHIELD in a special starring role for season four was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and was recently nominated for a Golden Globe. CCH Pounder also received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her performance on THE SHIELD.
