Victoria Rowell Raises Awareness on Foster Care

May is National Foster Care Awareness Month and Victoria Rowell recently held a benefit with Samuel Jackson and his wife LaTanya to spotlight the positive side of foster care. May 10 also happens to be Victoria's birthday, and today, we're celebrating this special woman and this very personal cause.

Victoria grew up in the foster care system and had a foster mother who encouraged her interests in the arts, to which she attributes much of her success today. At age 8, she began taking classical ballet lessons. The same discipline required to excel in the world of ballet is exactly what Victoria needed to lead a successful life. In 1990, she began the non-profit foundation called the Rowell Foster Children's Positive Plan, which helps kids thrive through cultural enrichment, sports and the arts.

In 2004, the writers at The Young and the Restless crafted a storyline for her character, Drucilla, that highlighted the benefits of foster care by bringing Devon Hamilton into the lives of the Winters Family. In a case of art imitating life, Victoria's passion for children shined. Away from the studio, Rowell navigates her way through the political and entertainment arenas raising money and awareness for the issues that face the foster care system today and the positive possibilities that are available to the children.
