How many of you use sponges or brushes when washing your dishes or cleaning your kitchen counters and kitchen table? They can hold a lot of bacteria. I throw them in the dishwasher with my dirty dishes when I run a cycle to help kill the bacteria they've collected. I occasionally put my toothbrush in there too so that it will come out fresh and clean! If you don't have a dishwasher, try running scalding hot water over your sponges and brushes for 30 seconds.
Do you have any kitchen cleaning tips that you'd like to share?

I'll tell my mom about what you said and she will love it!
Thanks Vanna for this tip!

Vanna -- While I realize you probably don't read all this stuff personally, the toothbrush comment was very apropos. I use a variation which you might pass on. I keep a small spray bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide by my brushes and after brushing in the evening, I give the brush a quick spritz. An excellent germicidal, keeps the bristles snowy white and I have seen no undue wear on the toothbrush.
Also,I live alone, I have a dishwaher, but not having enough dishes to fill it up, I do dishes by hand, and then dry them with paper towels, as I don't like the lint from the dish towels which gets on the dishes.

To keep my kitchen sinks fresh-smelling, I periodically half fill both sinks with very hot water with 2 tablespoons of chlorine bleach to each side. Then, using long-handled wooden spoons, release the water in both sinks simultaneously. This "bathes" the insides of the disposal and pipes, helping to kill the odor causing bacteria.
Another way to sanitize sponges is to get them sopping wet and then put them in the microwave. Give it enough time for the sponge to get steamy. Think mine is done in like 30 seconds. After the timer goes off, I leave it in there till it's cooled so it has lots of killing time.
Have wondered if you are allowed to wear anything you have made yoursekf on the show?
