RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE FAQs
1. What is Resident Evil: Afterlife?
Resident Evil: Afterlife is a 2010 action horror film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, who returned to the franchise as director for the first time since the original Resident Evil (2002). Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing through its Screen Gems label, it is the fourth installment in the Resident Evil film series and the direct sequel to Resident Evil: Extinction (2007). Afterlife was the first film in the franchise shot in native 3D, using the Sony F35 camera mounted on the Fusion Camera System previously used on Avatar.
2. When does the story take place?
Set shortly after the events of Resident Evil: Extinction, the film opens with Alice and an army of her clones launching a coordinated assault on Umbrella Corporation's heavily fortified headquarters in Tokyo. After the attack, the real Alice is stripped of her superhuman abilities in a confrontation with Umbrella chairman Albert Wesker and begins searching the Pacific coast for the survivors who had set out for the rumored safe haven called Arcadia. Tracking the broadcast signal to Alaska, Alice finds only abandoned planes and a feral, memory-stripped Claire Redfield, before tracing Arcadia to a massive container ship moored off the coast of Los Angeles, where she encounters a group of survivors trapped inside a downtown prison and uncovers the true purpose of the Arcadia broadcast.
3. Who are the main characters?
The film centers on Alice (Milla Jovovich), now stripped of her superhuman powers and forced to fight as an ordinary human; Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), returning from Extinction with amnesia inflicted by an Umbrella control device; and Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller), Claire's brother and a key character from the Capcom games making his first appearance in the film franchise, introduced as a prisoner trapped inside the downtown Los Angeles jail. They are joined by Luther West (Boris Kodjoe), a former professional basketball player leading the survivors in the prison; Bennett Sinclair (Kim Coates), a film producer among the trapped group; K-Mart (Spencer Locke), the teenage survivor from Extinction; Crystal Waters (Kacey Barnfield), an aspiring actress; and Angel Ortiz (Sergio Peris-Mencheta), a mechanic, alongside other inmates and refugees taking shelter inside the prison walls.
4. Who is Albert Wesker?
Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) is the primary antagonist of Resident Evil: Afterlife: the chairman of the Umbrella Corporation, who has injected himself with the T-virus to gain superhuman strength, speed, and regenerative abilities comparable to those of Alice at her enhanced peak. A central villain across the broader Resident Evil video game franchise, Wesker makes his first major appearance in the film series here, opening Afterlife by personally orchestrating the destruction of Umbrella's Tokyo headquarters and the elimination of every Alice clone. He later survives a plane crash, reactivates a remote Umbrella operation aboard the Arcadia container ship off the Los Angeles coast, and reveals that the so-called sanctuary has been an Umbrella trap all along, designed to lure surviving humans into custody as fresh test subjects. By the climax, Wesker has begun to lose control over the T-virus inside his body and believes that consuming Alice will let him stabilize his condition, setting up the film's final confrontation.
5. How does this film connect to the broader Resident Evil franchise?
Resident Evil: Afterlife is the fourth film in the original Resident Evil film series, following Resident Evil (2002), Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), and Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), and preceding Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016). It marks Paul W. S. Anderson's return to the director's chair after a two-film hiatus and introduces game character Chris Redfield into the film franchise for the first time. The franchise was later rebooted with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021).
