Sony Pictures Classics To Release ‘Freud’s Last Session’, Starring Anthony Hopkins And Matthew Goode, In New York And Los Angeles On December 22, 2023

NEW YORK (October 5, 2023) – Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they will release FREUD’S LAST SESSION in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on December 22, 2023, followed by an expansion in January. Directed by Matt Brown, the film stars Academy Award® winner Anthony Hopkins and Emmy® nominee Matthew Goode. The screenplay is written by Mark St. Germain (THE GOD COMMITTEE) based on his play of the same name.

On the eve of the Second World War, two of the greatest minds of the twentieth century, Sigmund Freud (Hopkins) and C.S. Lewis (Goode), converge for their own personal battle over the existence of God. FREUD’S LAST SESSION interweaves the lives of Freud and Lewis, past, present, and through fantasy, bursting from the confines of Freud’s study on a dynamic journey.

The film is produced by Alan Greisman, Rick Nicita, Meg Thomson, Hannah Leader, Tristan Orpen Lynch, and Robert Stillman.

This project reunites Sony Pictures Classics with Hopkins following numerous collaborations, including the distributor’s first release over 30 years ago, HOWARDS END, and THE FATHER in 2020, for which Hopkins won the Academy Award® for Best Actor. The film features cinematography by Ben Smithard, B.S.C, who also worked on THE FATHER, and production design by Luciana Arrighi, who won the Oscar for Best Art Direction for HOWARDS END.
