INSIDIOUS: THE RED DOOR FAQs

  1. What is Insidious: The Red Door?
Insidious: The Red Door is a 2023 American supernatural horror film directed by Patrick Wilson, in his feature directorial debut, from a screenplay by Scott Teems. Story by Leigh Whannell and Scott Teems. Produced by Screen Gems and Blumhouse Productions in association with Sony's Stage 6 Films, the film is the fifth installment in the Insidious franchise and a direct sequel to Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), returning to the Lambert family a decade after the events of the original two films.
  2. When does the story take place?
Set in 2019, roughly a decade after the events of Insidious: Chapter 2, the film finds the Lambert family fractured. Josh and Renai have divorced, and the hypnosis that suppressed Josh and Dalton's memories of The Further has left both father and son feeling foggy, distant, and unable to maintain their relationship with each other. When Josh's mother Lorraine dies and he drives Dalton to begin his freshman year of art school at a New England university, the trip ends in an argument. Soon after, Dalton's freshman painting class brings repressed memories of The Further bleeding back to the surface, while Josh, plagued by the apparent ghost of his estranged late father, begins to suspect that the door between dimensions he and his son once closed has been quietly reopening.
  3. Who are the main characters?
The film centers on a now adult Dalton Lambert (Ty Simpkins), arriving at his first year of college with no memory of his childhood ordeal; his father Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson), who is grieving his mother's death and his own unraveling family; Dalton's mother Renai Lambert (Rose Byrne); and his younger brother Foster Lambert (Andrew Astor). New to the franchise are Chris Winslow (Sinclair Daniel), Dalton's quick-witted college roommate who becomes his closest ally as his hauntings begin; Professor Armagan (Hiam Abbass), Dalton's demanding art instructor, whose assignments draw him toward his repressed memories; and Peter Dager as Nick the Dick, an antagonistic upperclassman. Lin Shaye returns in a cameo as Elise Rainier, with Joseph Bishara reprising the Lipstick-Face Demon and Steve Coulter making a brief return as Carl.
  4. Who is the Lipstick-Face Demon?
The Lipstick-Face Demon (Joseph Bishara), introduced as the central villain of the original Insidious (2010), returns as the primary antagonist of The Red Door. A red-skinned demonic entity who has spent years waiting in his cavernous lair inside The Further for another chance at Dalton Lambert, the demon takes advantage of Dalton's loosening hypnotic blocks to draw him back through the red door and finish what he started a decade earlier. As Dalton's memories of The Further return and he loses control of his ability to astral project, the demon escalates from background presence to active threat, eventually possessing Dalton's body in the real world and turning the family confrontation into a fight to seal the dimensional door once and for all. Running parallel to the demon's return is the spectral presence of Ben Burton, Josh's estranged late father, whose own untreated astral gift offers Josh a chance to understand the curse running through his bloodline.
  5. How does this film connect to the broader Insidious franchise?
Insidious: The Red Door is the fifth installment in the Insidious franchise and the sixth and final film in the series' current internal chronology, serving as a direct sequel to Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) after two prequel films, Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) and Insidious: The Last Key (2018), expanded the backstory of psychic medium Elise Rainier. The Red Door marks Patrick Wilson's feature directorial debut and brings back nearly the entire original cast of the first two films. The franchise continues with Insidious: Out of the Further (2026), which introduces a new family to the Insidious universe.
